A beloved hamburg steak restaurant from Japan is arriving at one of the CBD’s busiest lunch spots. Yamamoto's Hamburg, a Tokyo-born restaurant by Shohei Yamamoto that’s also known as Yamahan, will set up shop at Lau Pa Sat from September 22 for its soft launch. The full opening follows shortly after on October 5, 2026.

If the name Yamamoto rings a bell, that’s because the restaurateur is also the person behind Hikiniku To Come, the Japanese hamburg brand that landed in Singapore earlier this year. But this venture goes back much further – Yamamoto’s Hamburg began in Tokyo’s Ebisu in 2005, long before his Singapore double act.

For this restaurant, you can expect pleasingly straightforward meals inspired by Yamamoto’s childhood dinners, especially the home-cooked food his mother prepared. The menu centres on handmade patties made from Japanese beef and pork, paired with rice and vegetables.

The signature Yamamoto Hamburg ($19.90) is the more indulgent option: a beef-and-pork patty filled with Gorgonzola and mushroom cream, then topped with a demi-glace sauce deepened with miso and dashi.

Elsewhere, the Jikasei Hamburg ($17.90) offers a simpler option, while the Kimchi Cheese Hamburg ($19.90) gets the full hot-pot treatment, with kimchi broth and melted cheese. There are also lighter, tangier versions including the Goma Yuzu Ponzu ($15.90) and Oni Oroshi Ponzu ($15.90), plus patties dressed with tomato sauce, garlic yuzu-pepper sauce, or karashi mayonnaise and cheese.

Singapore gets something of its own, too. A chicken patty has been developed exclusively for the local restaurant, made fresh in-house and served as another take on Yamahan’s hamburg format.

And because a meal involving a saucy meat patty apparently needs a wellness moment, there’s house-made vegetable juice to go with it. The recipe changes with the seasons, using a rotating selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. Order a Rice Set ($3.90) or Salad Set ($4.90) and a small tasting portion of the juice is included; a larger serving costs another $2.50.

The opening also comes with a small bit of merch. From October 5 to 7, the first 300 customers each day who spend at least $20 – before GST and service charge – will receive a five-piece pack of Yamahan stickers.
