About this event
The Peranakan Culture and Apom Bok Kwa Heritage Workshop Programme by The Peranakan Club is a three-hour immersive cultural experience designed to introduce participants to the rich traditions of the Peranakan (Straits-born Chinese) community in Singapore.
The programme combines heritage interpretation, experiential learning, and culinary traditions to illustrate how Peranakan culture developed through centuries of migration, cultural exchange, and intermarriage between Chinese settlers and local Malay communities across the Straits Settlements.
Participants first explore curated heritage spaces through a docent-led cultural tour, where they learn about Peranakan migration history, domestic life, women's rituals, and the symbolic meaning embedded in traditional objects, attire, and household practices.
The experience continues with a hands-on culinary workshop focused on preparing Apom Bok Kwa, a traditional fermented coconut pancake that reflects the unique cultural fusion of Peranakan cuisine.
The programme concludes with a heritage tasting session featuring iconic Peranakan dishes such as Dry Laksa, Buah Keluak Rice, and Lemongrass Pandan Tea, accompanied by guided reflection on how food traditions preserve family knowledge, hospitality values, and cultural identity.
Led primarily by Singapore-based heritage docents and culinary practitioners, the programme highlights the importance of intergenerational knowledge transmission and community storytelling in sustaining Peranakan culture as a living heritage.
Through storytelling, hands-on learning, and culinary engagement, the programme provides participants with a meaningful understanding of how Peranakan traditions continue to shape Singapore’s multicultural heritage today.
