About this event
A Journey of HOPE – Voyage South (下南洋) is an immersive heritage programme that retraces the remarkable journey of the early Chinese immigrants who crossed the South China Sea in search of a better future and contributed significantly to the making of modern Singapore.
Inspired by the historical migration movement known as 下南洋 (Voyage to the South Seas), the programme follows the footsteps of the pioneers from their arrival at Singapore's historic waterfront, through the bustling Singapore River, to Thian Hock Keng Temple — Singapore's oldest Hokkien temple and a National Monument gazetted in 1973. Along the way, participants discover the hopes, hardships and resilience of the early Chinese settlers, and how they built vibrant communities that became an integral part of Singapore's multicultural identity.
Combining guided storytelling, heritage interpretation and interactive activities, the programme encourages participants to connect with Singapore's tangible and intangible heritage — including its historic landmarks, migration traditions, beliefs and food culture.
Each participant receives a commemorative Heritage Immigration Pass to collect stamps and complete heritage discovery activities throughout the programme.
The experience concludes with A Taste of Hope, a heritage dining experience illustrating how Chinese immigrant communities adapted their culinary traditions to local ingredients, giving rise to icons of Singapore's food heritage.
