About this event

Every morning in Singapore, a plate holds the toast, a bowl cradles the eggs, and a cup carries the kopi. In The Morning Table, you make all three.

This 3-hour heritage pottery workshop is built around the modern interpretation of the Nanyang breakfast; one of Singapore's most widely shared daily rituals and a documented Intangible Cultural Heritage on Roots.gov.sg. Before you touch clay, you'll sit with the story: how Hainanese immigrants arriving in Singapore after the 1870s, having cooked in colonial households and on ships, eventually opened the kopitiams that became the city's living room.

Then you make the pottery at individual pottery wheels, you'll pull each form from centred clay — A wide-rimmed plate for the toast. A squat bowl for two soft-boiled eggs. An open kopi cup, light in the hand. Learning to read the wall thickness by touch, to shape the rim with intent. Placing your set directly within a ceramic lineage that stretches from the coffee shops of 1920s Singapore to the table in front of you.
