World Car-Free Day at Joo Chiat Road

If you frequent Joo Chiat, you’d know that crossing the road there can get quite challenging, what with its steady stream of cars, buses and the general chaos of a popular street. Now, imagine walking through the neighbourhood without having to dodge traffic or make a run for it every time you want to get to the other side.

That’s exactly what’s happening on October 3, when a stretch of Joo Chiat Road between Dunman Road and East Coast Road will be closed to traffic from 3.30pm to 9.30pm for World Car-Free Day. This marks the first time the annual initiative is taking its car-free experiment outside the CBD, with exhibits and activities planned along the road for the occasion.

Technically, World Car-Free Day falls on September 22, but Singapore’s celebrations are stretching from September to November this year. Alongside the Joo Chiat road closure, the Land Transport Authority is teaming up with the Health Promotion Board on a walking challenge. From September 14 to 30, Healthy 365 users who hit 10,000 steps for four consecutive days can earn a special-edition World Car-Free Day badge.

There’s also an interactive mobile game developed by LTA and GovTech, available through CrowdTaskSG from September 1 to November 30. Participants will have to walk, cycle and take public transport around the island while completing various challenges.
