Synopsis

Faced with the prospect of his deteriorating health, Kenmochi Kenji, an ageing art historian, becomes desperate to recover his virility. Believing that salvation lies in the stimulating throes of jealousy, he conspires to couple his young wife, Ikuko, with his daughter’s handsome lover, Kimura. His twisted machinations plunge the once-respectable family into an ever-growing web of lies, secrets and illicit affairs.

Simultaneously sensual and darkly comic, this bold film was awarded the Cannes Special Jury Prize in 1960. It was also awarded the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, the Kinema Junpo Award for Best Screenplay, and the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Director.
