About this event
Caricature Workshop Programme Overview
This workshop introduces participants to the history, techniques, and creative practice of caricature drawing through a structured and engaging session.
The programme begins with a 30-minute introduction to caricature across Asian and Western contexts. Participants will explore its origins, from Renaissance artists such as Leonardo da Vinci to Asian traditions like Chinese allegorical art and Japanese satire. The session also highlights the development of caricature in Singapore, featuring artists such as Tchang Ju Chi and Johnny Lau. Through these examples, participants will understand how caricature reflects humour, identity, and social commentary.
Participants will then spend 15 minutes learning the fundamentals of caricature drawing, including facial proportions, identifying distinctive features, and practising exaggeration while maintaining likeness. Short exercises help build observation skills and confidence.
This is followed by a 30-minute guided sketching session, where participants apply these techniques through reference images or self-portraits, exploring different styles and levels of exaggeration. A 10-minute segment then focuses on refining drawings through linework, shading, or colour to enhance visual impact.
Participants will then spend 35 minutes exploring local caricature styles from the 1980s to today, gaining appreciation of Singapore's visual culture and incorporating local themes into their work.
The workshop concludes with a 10-minute sharing session, where participants reflect on their work, observe different approaches, and deepen their appreciation of caricature as both an artistic and communicative practice.
