About it

Five Years of Dance Rhythms – A Nanyang Journey 《五年舞韵~踏歌而行的南洋之旅》 uses dance as a language to take audiences on a journey through time, revisiting the footsteps of Singapore’s development. Rooted in the history and culture of Singapore’s Chinese community, the production draws its inspiration from the “Red Headscarf Women” of our history, who journeyed south to Nanyang in search of a livelihood and made silent yet invaluable contributions to their families and society.

Through movement, we return to the Singapore River of the past, which, like an elegant young woman, gently whispers her stories and bears witness to the hopes and changes of early Nanyang. We step into the simple, heartwarming rural life of Singapore before the 1970s, from local theatre steeped in the Nanyang spirit to childhood songs sung in different dialects. Each chapter carries the footsteps of our forebears, preserving their struggles, cultural heritage and heartfelt memories.

Finally, Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim, becomes the spiritual symbol of the production. Unafraid of wind and rain, it blooms with resilience, reflecting the indomitable spirit of Singaporeans, from a humble fishing village to a modern international city.

Let us follow the rhythm of the dance, look back on our history and give thanks for the sacrifices of those who came before us, as we move towards a brighter future.
