About this event
Hidden in every glittering bead and careful stitch of a Kasut Manik is a love letter from the past - a story of culture, craftsmanship, and quiet resilience.Worn proudly by the Peranakan ladies, these beaded shoes are more than just beautiful accessories; they are heirlooms of identity, crafted with patience, adorned with symbolism, and passed down through generations. Each pair is a canvas of delicate artistry of vibrant birds, blooming peonies, and mythical creatures, all meticulously formed using tiny glass beads and fine thread, often by hand over many painstaking hours. In a world that moves fast, the Kasut Manik invites us to slow down, to be mindful, to admire, and to connect with heritage in a tangible, heartfelt way, one bead at a time. When we honour these shoes, we honour the women who made them — their artistry, their stories, and their silent strength. In each pair lives the spirit of sustainability too: did you know these shoes can be"re-shoed"up to three times, allowing the beaded upper to continue shining while the soles are renewed? It is a sustainable practice long before sustainability was a buzzword.Discover the art and soul of Kasut Manik alongside Mr. Raymond Wong, one of the Stewards of Intangible Cultural Heritage Award 2023 by the National Heritage Board. Mr. Wong has also embroidered almost every Kebaya worn by the female cast members of the popular Emerald Hill drama series.Participants will learn the cultural significance of beaded shoes, recognise what makes each pair unique in design and symbolism. Gain hands-on experience with materials, beadwork and stitching techniques by making a mini beaded art. Explore how to extend the concept of beaded artistry beyond shoes such as bags, and even modern accessories. Topics include Cultural Significance of Kasut Manik, Beadwork Materials, Stitching and Modernisation.
