About this event

Rediscover the almost-forgotten heritage of Singapore, when fishing villages and wooden kampong houses were once a common sight. This unique experience lets you experience a sliver of the past—from the Kampongs on Pulau Ubin to the slowly-diminishing Kelongs (floating fish farms) that dot the waters.

Together with local tour guides, we’ll take a nostalgic bumboat ride to Pulau Ubin. Hear fascinating stories about its history, gain insights into kampong life and learn more about the island’s thriving biodiversity. After the guided tour, another short boat ride will take us to the last surviving kelong restaurant for a sampling brunch menu of freshly-caught fish and more. You also have the rare opportunity to buy fresh fish from the farm! Learn about Singapore’s offshore fish farms and their sustainability efforts, and soak in the panoramic views. Along the way, we’ll reflect on important topics such as preserving the cultural heritage in Singapore, and the fine balancing act of tradition and modernity.

This Ubin and Kelong activity encourages Singaporeans to connect with their roots and cultural traditions, offering urban dwellers a chance to experience the lives of earlier generations so that we can all continue telling the stories of Singapore’s multi-faceted heritage.
