Synopsis

At the close of World War II in Burma, a Japanese imperial regiment surrenders to the British forces after finding a sense of humanity through song. Following their surrender, Mizushima, a private who plays a unique Burmese harp in the unit, is tasked with convincing another Japanese unit to lay down their arms. When the mission fails, his platoon attempts to track him down even though he is presumed to be dead. Mizushima survives, but disguises himself as a Buddhist monk, eventually embracing a life devoted to remembering the lives lost and to peace.

Adapted from a children’s novel by Michio Takeyama, The Burmese Harp is a meditative and humanistic exploration of the tragic aftermath of war and the human cost of violence. Through the recurring motif of music and song, Ichikawa finds a language of solidarity, mourning, and redemption. Kon Ichikawa’s 27th feature remains one of the defining anti-war films in Japanese cinema, alongside Fires of the Plain (1959), which finally brought Ichikawa to wider international attention.
