When Minister Li Tingfu offers his daughter Xiuying in marriage to the scholar Wang Yulin, her jealous cousin Gu Wenyou conspires to destroy their union. He plants a stolen family heirloom — the Jade Hairpin — alongside a forged love letter in the bridal chamber, framing Xiuying for infidelity.
Wang Yulin believes the fabricated evidence without question, subjecting his innocent wife to years of coldness and cruelty. Xiuying silently endures, unable to understand his hostility.
When she falls gravely ill and the truth is finally uncovered, Wang Yulin is overcome with remorse. Xiuying chooses compassion over resentment, and the couple are reconciled.
