Drawing & Sketching Workshop Programme Overview

This workshop introduces drawing and sketching as the foundation of visual art, supporting disciplines such as painting, sculpture, and design. Participants will explore drawing as both a tool for observation and creative expression.

The programme begins with a 15-minute introduction to historical and cultural contexts, exploring how artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer used drawing to study form, proportion, and light, alongside observational practices in Asian art traditions.

A 10-minute segment then focuses on the Singaporean context, introducing Nanyang artists such as Georgette Chen and Chua Mia Tee, and how they applied still life drawing to explore local themes and tonal contrast.

Participants will spend 15 minutes learning essential rendering techniques — including shading, light, shadow, and texture — to create depth, followed by a 15-minute miniature still life study to apply these concepts.

In a 10-minute demonstration, the instructor will guide participants through a step-by-step approach to still life drawing, covering composition, structure, and tonal layering. This leads into a 1-hour guided drawing session, where participants develop a full still life work with personalised guidance to build confidence and technical skills.

The workshop concludes with a 10-minute reflection and sharing session, reinforcing key concepts and encouraging appreciation of drawing as a versatile and expressive art form.
