About this event
Marine heritage and coastal culture workshop, two hours.
This educational programme explores Singapore's coastal heritage through tangible marine artefacts and cultural stories from traditional shoreline communities. Participants learn how intertidal areas supported kampong life through fishing, foraging, and salt-making while examining authentic artefacts including fishing equipment, shells, coral fragments, and traditional tools. The workshop features rotation stations covering artefact examination, traditional fishing techniques including kelong construction, and storytelling about early coastal communities like those at Pulau Ubin. Participants engage in heritage mapping activities and create artistic interpretations of Singapore's heritage shoreline inspired by the artefacts and cultural narratives.
This workshop excellently preserves Singapore's maritime heritage by connecting tangible coastal artefacts with intangible cultural knowledge about traditional fishing communities and shoreline livelihoods. The hands-on exploration of authentic fishing tools and marine specimens combined with storytelling about kampong coastal life provides comprehensive understanding of Singapore's relationship with the sea. The creative mapping and artistic components help participants visualise and internalise heritage connections while the focus on both tangible and intangible heritage elements makes this an ideal SG Culture Pass offering that promotes heritage education, encourages appreciation for Singapore's maritime traditions, and fosters understanding of how coastal environments shaped local culture and daily life.
